How important is the sound guy?

How important is the sound guy? Artists have stated that the guy mixing the show front of house can sometimes make or break a show. While the studio recording may be fantastic, and the artist is giving all they can to the audience, its the sound guys responsibility to amplify the talent and deliver.

Today’s educated audience knows when there are technical problems. They are also comparing the live show to what they have heard recorded. People will excuse funky lighting, but it is hard to cover up a bad mix. So to all you artists out there – become friends or even best friends with the sound guy. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you expect. Have a real conversation about the music. Introduce him to the rest of the guys. And please, make sure he has heard the recordings prior to the show.
